A Brief History of Pocatello
Pocatello, located in Bannock County near the western Rocky Mountain foothills, is the fifth-largest city in the southeastern part of the state of Idaho, with a population of over 54,000. Historically, settlers, miners, and other travelers first began passing through this region in the mid to late 1800s. The trappings of civilization soon followed, transforming the area into a popular hub for trade and transport. The city was named after a Shoshone tribe chief who granted the railroad access through the Fort Hall Reservation.

Fun attractions here include the Museum of Clean, the Idaho Museum of Natural History, the Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Museum, and Zoo Idaho, just to name a few. During the beautiful summer months people can enjoy concerts hosted at the Portneuf Health Trust Amphitheatre. Families and friends can also come together and enjoy the many amenities of the Portneuf Wellness Complex.
This lovely city also boasts many parks, nature trails, and recreation programs such as backpacking trips, climbing lessons, fun runs, and the Just Cuz Half Marathon. There are several attractions within a three-hour drive of the area including: Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park near Jackson, Wyoming, and Sun Valley for those who enjoy snow skiing.
Strolling Old Town is a favorite among locals because of its historical surroundings, unique local shops and great food. During the fall season, you can explore the corn maze and pick your favorite pumpkin at Swore Farms. Make sure to stop by The Idaho Museum of Natural History at Idaho State University that features amazing exhibits, including helioshark fossils.

No matter what you’re craving, there is a good mix of popular places to eat in town including: Portneuf Valley Brewing, the ever-popular Big Foot Pizza, the delicious Indian cuisine of Himalayan Flavor, Chapala Mexican Restaurant, and the home cooking flavors of Jeri’s Jumbo’s Cafe.
Industry and Economy
Major area employers in Pocatello include Idaho State University, School District #25, Portneuf Medical Center, Simplot, and ON Semiconductor. The local economy is fueled by agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. The city is considered a retail and entertainment hub, as well.
Schools and Universities
The area is home to top-rated Local School District #25, as well as 28 private schools and two public charter schools. Also located in the city is Idaho State University which was founded in 1901. ISU offers students from around the world more than 250 different programs of study. It is also been designated as the state’s leader of education in health professions.
