Radon gas is the leading cause of lung cancer outside of smoking cigarettes.
What is radon gas?
It is formed from uranium breaking down in the soil, rocks, and water. The gas makes its way inside homes and commercial buildings through cracks in the floors and walls as well as broken pipes.Because you can’t see, smell or touch radon gas, this silent killer is responsible for an estimated 15,000 to 22,000 lung cancer deaths in the U.S. each year. The people most at risk unknowingly breathe in radon particles and drink water contaminated with radon. Of course, any smoker who is exposed to radon gas has an increased chance of developing lung cancer.
According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), 1 out of 15 homes in the U.S. is exposed to high levels of radon. The results change drastically to 1 out of 3 homes in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.
Radon Testing
The only way to truly know if dangerous levels of radon are in your home is to have your home tested by a professional. You can use either a short-term test kit that lasts 4 days or the long-term one that can be used for a year.Radon levels are measured on a scale of picocuries per liter (pCi/L), with 1.0 being the lowest and 5.0 pCi/L being the extreme.
The EPA advises reducing radon levels if the frequent exposure yields 4.0 pCi/L.The EPA’s recommended way to reduce radon gas is through radon testing and mitigation with a certified contractor with the required technical skills.
